How do I manage my Teaching Specialties? (What are Teacher "Tags"?)

There are 3 types of Teacher "Tags" that you can use to quickly show what you do best.

  • Teaching Specialties - show which students you are especially able to help
  • Personal Tags - let students know more about you and your lessons
  • Teacher Quality Tags - students choose what they most appreciate about you

Make yourself stand out to prospective students by setting your Teaching Specialties

All italki teachers are expected to teach their native language to adult learners. If you have other specialties or experience/certification teaching other kinds of learners, you can represent those skills in Teaching Specialties.  This will increase your chances of being contacted by the kinds of students that you want to teach.

You can manage your Teaching Specialties by going to:

Edit Profile >> Teacher Settings >> Basic Information >> Teaching Specialties or Lesson Audio / Video

Please note that added Teaching Specialties "Tags" will not update immediately; they must be approved by italki staff.

How does this look to students?

Students can search for you according to these "Tags".  Please choose tags according to what students you want to teach.  For example, if you are willing to teach beginners, use the "Beginners" tag to let students know that you would like to teach them.  If you have experience teaching beginners, but do not want to teach beginning students right now, then do not choose that tag.  You can add it again later, if you want.

How will it look on my profile?

When you've chosen your specialties, they will show up on your profile like this:

How do I choose my Teaching Specialties?

Here are the details about the current teaching specialties "tags".  Please only choose those that apply to you and that you want to teach so these students can find you more easily.  For example, if you prefer to work with intermediate and advanced students, do not choose "Beginners".

Please note: these are the most basic specialties.  We may add more in the future based on your feedback:

Lesson Audio / Video - We know that some teachers prefer to teach audio lessons only.  You can tell your students here:

  • AUDIO: I can provide live audio lessons with students.
At italki, all teachers must be able to provide live audio classes through tools like Skype.
  • VIDEO: I can provide live video lessons with students.
This is not required. However, many students prefer teachers that can provide live video lessons through tools like Skype.
