Why can’t I reschedule my lesson? (within 24 hours of lesson time or 72 hours after a "problem")

Within our current system, there are two possible reasons why you might not be able to reschedule a lesson.  If neither of these reasons applies, please refresh the page you are using to view the teacher's schedule and try again before contacting italki Support.

 

1. If the lesson is less than 24 hours away

You will not be able to reschedule using the italki system.

2. If you are trying to reschedule after reporting a problem with a session within 72 hours of the original lesson time.

You will not be able to reschedule using the system.  We know this may be inconvenient for some, but the policy has been chosen to ensure fairness in allowing both the teacher and the student to plan their time in advance.  Teachers and students who trust each other and are in agreement about what they would like to do may be able to find other ways to work together and make up the lesson time, for example, by agreeing on a time to meet on Instant Tutoring.

We know this is sometimes very difficult when you would prefer to just have your session as soon as possible. If this is inconvenient for you, you may be able to work with your teacher (or student) to come up with a solution you can both agree on. FAQ: What is the italki Rescheduling Policy?

While it is wonderful to be able to connect language teachers and students from all over the world, the fact that many come from different time zones is a challenge to scheduling.  

In the past, we've had issues when a student would try to pick a time less than 48 hours away, and the teacher didn't have a chance to even look at the newly-chosen time, so it just expired. We need to be fair and make sure that both the teacher and student have adequate time to view and confirm reschedule requests.

 

Why is rescheduling such a big deal?  Because it may have consequences for determining who gets the italki Credits.

Under our current system, when a reschedule request expires, the italki Credits must be sent to the teacher, to the student or split evenly between the two.  Because of this, we must give the student and teacher at least 48 hours to respond to a rescheduling request.  Because both must be able to respond in time, to assure that the italki Credits is divided fairly, the italki system cannot officially reschedule a missed lesson within 72 hours of the original lesson time.  

 

We realize this might not be ideal for teachers and students who respond to requests immediately or who are in close contact. However, we’ve enacted this policy to assure fair treatment to all.  Again, if you are already in close contact with your teacher (or student), perhaps the two of you can come to an agreement that works for both.  If you have feedback about this policy or if there is something you'd like us to know, please write to us at support@italki.com
