The italki Classroom is italki's own video chat service. It's built into the browser so you don't need any extra tools like Skype. The italki Classroom offers:
- A seamless experience for students and teachers to have a lesson
- A quick lesson confirmation flow for students after the lesson
- Built-in video, audio and text chat
CLASSROOM-ENABLED STUDENT ACCOUNTS
We're currently testing the italki Classroom with a select group of students. Students with Classroom-enabled accounts do not have the opportunity to provide external communication tool IDs while scheduling a lesson.
We've recently expanded this to include all students from China as communication tools such as SKYPE are no longer available for download in Chinese app stores. We are quickly rolling out the Classroom to more students.
MANDATORY OR OPTIONAL?
It is not mandatory to use the italki Classroom, though it is the formal communication tool for students and teachers to conduct lessons on italki. Informally, you may agree with the student to use an external communication tool.
If you prefer to use a different communication tool, you may send students a message prior to the lesson start time or communicate your preference during a lesson. You may use another communication tool (i.e. Skype, Google Hangouts) if there is an agreement between you and the student to do so.
IMPORTANT: Keep in mind that certain students may not have access to Skype or other communication tools based on their location (i.e. China and UAE) – the italki Classroom is often their only option to connect with italki teachers. Teachers should reach out to the student to see if they can use a different communication tool and should not reject a lesson request only because it uses the italki Classroom.
LESSON CONTENT PRIVACY
Your web browser may ask you to provide italki.com platform permission to access your camera and microphone to enter the italki Classroom. However, your lesson content is private. italki does not have access to your video or audio content and we do not record video or audio of any part of a lesson in the italki Classroom.
Under special circumstances (i.e. Lesson Disputes), italki customer service staff may access message text-only history to support a resolution to a reported problem.
