Instant tutoring was a useful tool for both the students and the teacher and I think it should not be removed. However, if you decide to remove or modify it, it should at least be replaced with a similar tool which enables spontaneous scheduling of lessons.

Perhaps I'm overthinking this.... but what could be the logical reason for cutting instant tutoring?? One thing we all tend to agree on is the numerous things the platform and minds behind it have gotten correct in the past...

So what would possess the same likeminded people to cancel such a useful feature so randomly and with little to no explanation of why, and then more or less ignore the reasonable pleas for reconsideration?

Does anyone have a possible theory that could make this somewhat palatable?

Sofia, I know it but they are not interested. They can find another page which will satisfy them straight away, they don't want to wait for ITALKI. They have no time and time is money.

It would be great if something could be done about the ineffective messaging system   You get an email with a message that there is a message, and then it's necessary to go to the message system and scroll through messages of requests, confirmations, and "Lesson starts in 120 mins " in order to find a critical message between teacher and student.  Please do something about this soon.  Thanks.

This update is a disaster! I can't scroll down my messages and notifications too. Half of my lessons are hidden and students may miss them.

Patricia You're totally right. Time is money and those who do this kind of classes do not have much time. I hope that the italki has in mind the number of cancellations

i appreciate that you are trying to improve the site for the teachers and for the students !!!!

but to be honest the classic version is much better for everyone and was more organised

please bring it back or leave it as a choice for those who want to use it !!!!

In the part of the calendar the order is decreasing instead of being increasing instead of having 6 pm-7pm and then 7 pm-8pm I have 7-8 and then 6-7.I must not be the only one to whom this confuses me. My brain is going to knot

You regret removing instant tutoring? Then, why do it? Although I don’t use it often, it’s a flexible option. Teachers and students need flexibility. Please make a change so that teachers get paid faster. We should not have to wait 3 days for a student to confirm. I know it used to be 7 days many years ago when I first started, but there’s still much improvement that needs to be made. Please understand that not all
Changes are improvements. Unnecessary changes make the website seem UNPREDICTABLE AND UNSTABLE, and will cause teachers and students to look for other alternatives, even the the ones who’ve been with Italki for nearly half a decade!

It is organized, the problem is that they switched from ascending to descending order. I do not understand the logic

Teachers, it’s important for us to stick together and support each other. Especially since many of us don’t get that support from Italki. Many teachers have mentioned other competitive websites and I was just curious if you’d inbox me some of those names? I will also reply with a few that I’m familiar with. Thank you :)

Feel really confused about the new site and the message on both sites does not work right now.

Hope we could still use the old version as long as possible.

    Thank you!

Waiting for the student until the end time of the lesson?  Are you serious? No way! Especially if the student asks you for a refund later on.

Why on earth would you remove instant tutoring?

Candy The old site seems to only show me as a student, although I have never taken any lessons on Italki.   I can't even see my earnings on it so no point in me using it.

Altini   I wouldn't mention other sites on this page as the Italki people will read it. Happy to exchange via FB Pm if you want

Can we get some of this new site straightened out please? Before we get to talking about what we want and don't want as teachers and as students let's work with what we have and try to make it better.

    1. The teacher calendar displays the upcoming lessons out of order. Look at Monday 1 and 8 and look at Friday. On my calendar right now I have a lesson at 14:00 displaying above the lesson at 08:00 and a lesson at 16:00 displaying above a lesson at 15:00 on another day. That is confusing and would likely be problematic.

    2. Is there a reason the cancelled lessons need to display on the calendar as well? It's just busy visually and all mine have nothing to do with me. A student scheduled a lesson, then cancelled, then scheduled with me at a different time rather than rescheduling their original request. Now I have random grey blotches on my calendar in the future. (shown in above photo on 2 and 8)

    3. If I get a friend request it just sends me to the original site even though I read the message on "teacher mode" on the teach.italki website. How is that supposed to work?

    4. This display is confusing on the teacher profile page. All the lessons say "Professional Lesson" even though those are different offerings. Shouldn't the lesson title be bigger than the classification? If you could literally just switch the bottom and top lines that would be perfect. I can't seem to edit that in the teacher settings if there is a way.

    5. I formally second the request to remove all the lesson notifications from the message center. I really don't need a notification that I left feedback for a student. I literally did it...I was there. For the other ones, "Lesson starting in 120 mins" and all those, can we just put them somewhere else? Having it all together has made me miss a student message when I'm just scrolling since the notifications are so much larger than the message bubble.

    6. If you are addressing the concerns mentioned by other people already (Instant tutoring, booking in less than 24 hours, cancellation policy, etc) Can you keep us updated on where you are with those things? It seems like there are a lot of people waiting to know what's going on and being informed would be great.

    ------------------------------------------------------

Also I think taking out Questions, Articles, and Discussions really closes in the platform. If the goal is to isolate students from each other that seems odd but if you're going for that can you explain why? As a student I personally used those to better my understanding of language concepts I found difficult. I didn't have to ask the questions because someone usually already had and someone had answered. As a teacher I used those to put myself out there for students to find me and to take up my time while I was waiting for an instant tutoring request to come in.

Small addendum, can student endorsements display somewhere? That would be great because I would like other students to know that my current and former students think I'm punctual, likeable, prepared, etc.

    Generally, I appreciate the update.
However, I can't see any of my messages, neither on the teach.italki.com site, nor on the "normal" site.
    On mobile, everything works fine.
    Please fix that.

There are many people new to italki who have their first lesson via instant tutoring. That way, they don't have to wait to try out the platform. I have met some of my long term students via instant tutoring, it's a good way for students to meet teachers. I'm interested as to why it's being discontinued, because I think it's a very popular format for both teachers and students.

When I first joined Italki four years ago, I asked them if it were possible to have some kind of contract (for my country's tax authority), they said no because basically it is merely a platform offering us the possibility of lessons, not an employer guaranteeing work.

    Fine and so it remains.

None of us are employees, we are all free-lancers working in the wild-west world of the online teaching business- Italki's sole purpose is to make money in that same business. If the restrictions start to outweigh the advantages of having a potential* worldwide pool of students and a safe payment mechanism, then I will move without a second thought.

I feel, therefore, it is all a bit pointless, as free-lancers, complaining about what they are doing about cancellation policies etc.

They supply the platform, they give us the rules to use that platform. If they are too onerous, we move on, no need to give one month's notice or whatever.

They believe these new rules will increase (or at least maintain) their present level of income- the reinstatement of the 45 minute lesson is purely on financial grounds (the realisation that students and teachers would reach their own agreement outside Italki).

They likewise will have an economic reason for removing Instant Tutoring, not quite sure what it is at the moment but it will be there.

If they lose teachers, which I think they will do, they will soon be replaced, that is the reality of the "market" we are in- to put it bluntly, the competition for students is a higher priority for them than the competition for teachers and we would be naive to pretend otherwise.

*I think the bigger issue we should all be thinking about longer term is whether that pool of students is actually increasing at the same rate exponentially as the number of new. teachers. I suspect not and that means fiercer competition, inevitably lower prices and stricter restrictions to follow. But you have a choice folks...

    1. Thank you for keeping the 45-minute lesson length. For teachers who teach all day, it is nice to have a 15-minute break now and then in a long block of back-to-back classes without having to book a 30-minute break, which would be too long and cut into the paycheck.

    2. Having to wait for a student until the end of the lesson is unacceptable. If a student wants to blow off class without warning me, I shouldn't have to waste my time waiting for them. As it is now, I wait 15 minutes, and then leave a message stating that it looks like the student will be unavailable and I hope to see them in the next class --- and I go to take care of other responsibilities. This allows me to feel OK with allowing students to reschedule sometimes, even if they just didn't show up. With the new policy, I will have to be a lot harder on my students, and just make them pay if they don't show up. I like to be able to be a little flexible, and you're taking that away from me.

    3. Teachers should be able to individualize their policies, and those should be in a place that students can easily access, so that it is easy for them to know what my policy is.

    4. Instant tutoring is necessary for students who have busy schedules, and for teachers who use Italki as a supplement to their main income. Please leave the feature in place.

    5. I strongly dislike the new website format, especially the horrible messaging system. I don't appreciate being told I have messages and have to check, only to find that it is just a "class is upcoming" or "class is ended" message. This is a waste of my time.

I don't like the way Italki is moving. You've slowly been taking away teacher freedoms. I'd like to say from right now, if you EVER in the future force us to use the Italki platform instead of Skype, I will quit on the spot. And I'm a professional teacher with years of experience who has taught here since 2014 and has over 3000 classes for Italki under my belt.

-Instant tutoring is a flexible option for many students and teachers. Definitely a sad thing to see it go. Loss of income for many tutors and missed educational opportunities for students.

-Teachers and tutors are freelance workers and not employees: their time is set by themselves only. You are not legally entitled to demand that we wait for the entire time for a no-show student. We should determine our own individual cancellation policy.
I pay a fee to enjoy a steady influx of students and I respect the code of conduct. This is where it ends. Determining how I can schedule my classes and organize my time (and cancellations and no-shows) should not be dictated to me. I will not honor that request.

Thank you for not removing 45 minute lessons. However we are at a great disadvantage with the removal of Instant Tutoring and having to wait for the student. In my opinion, these are grave errors and you will lose a lot of teachers this way. Every update you do seems overly complicated and less refined than before! Please change the messaging system so that we are not sent a message when we have just given feedback - we don't need to know this, we've just done it! But the system such as it is would have us miss actual messages and this needs to change urgently.

I think it's not fair to have to wait the full lesson time for a student. 15 minutes is quite enough! Anyway students and teachers get reminders beforehand about their upcoming lessons. Instant tutoring should come back. It's was a very useful and convenient tool!!

    Hi support team,

Please I would really appreciate reading my opinion. Last month I started offering instant tutoring to my students and everything was great. In March, I doubled the number of lessons. There are lots of busy students who simply can´t book a lesson in advance, so instant tutoring was great for them. They simply book a lesson when they have a little time in their occupations. That feature was awesome and unique to Italki. I don´t understand why it´s canceled. Me and my students were getting beneficied and Italki was earning money. It was awesome for all of us. I just don´t understand why it´s removed. My students are asking me if it´s a permanent or temporary decision. I think that lots of students and lots of tutors will leave Italki for that reason and start looking for other competitors. It´s really a shame because we all love italki. I´m worried about this decision and I would evaluate other platforms myself.

Please, as many other colleagues here, please we ask you to consider returning the instant tutorings.

    Thanks.
