literally the instant tutoring policy makes ZERO sense... that's the major benefit i see in using italki and nearly all of the teachers and students who have spoken up seem to be expressing their dissatisfaction with this, yet you continue to glibly do away with it. so frustrating. it makes me (as a student) far less likely to use italki. I seek other platforms when i have something i want to cover on a short time frame. 24 hr advance notice for lessons is great for regular standing lessons, but if anything arises on the fly, or if students have last minute questions, or even just a spare hour they want to fill, they're able to use it. this also cuts down on people exploring other languages for fun during their spare time. suuuuuuuper frustrating!

Since the removal of instant tutoring, I took only two lessons here last year. It is at least ten times less than before. Well done, Italki!

I used to have 2 or sometimes 3 instant tutoring sessions everyday for almost three years. Last year I had 0 new students and only 1 class a week.

Thankfully there are other companies who don't destroy a teacher's source of income overnight.

If we read the opening post from Italki  in this thread they state

"Instant Tutoring will be removed. We are exploring ideas which can offer more convenience and flexibility to students and teachers in the future. We regret that we are disabling this feature and will keep you posted about future developments."

So now, almost one year later, what have they done to achieve this goal, besides driving students and tutors away from the site?

When they first took away the Instant Tutoring I thought it was just an oversight.  At that time I left some messages for the company about the loss of this valuable tool to the students and teachers.

Now, after the responses by the company and the amount of time that has passed, the answers are clear.

    1)  This is a company and it doesn't want instant tutoring.  They are trying to mollify everyone by saying that they are thinking about it.  No, they don't see this in their interest to do.  Let's hope that some other web application is brought up to replace this function.

    2)  This is not an evil empire, just a bureaucracy that is working in its own interest. . and it's interest is to keep you as students and teachers, paying for the privilege to use the service.   If there is something better, you should go to it.  Otherwise, realize that they have their bureaucracy as their primary interest . . and this requires that you keep paying for their services.

    3)  If anyone knows about another Instant Tutoring website, please share it, so we can go to an organization that has its customer's interests in mind.   Italki is not going to respond to its customers . . it is not in their interest.

I am sorry to be the harbinger of bad news, but after working in the best bureaucracies (in the world) for fifty years, I can tell you that they are in their initial stages of just trying to figure out what they are doing.

With people forced to quarantine and stay at home for the near future surely bringing back Instant Tutoring is the smart thing to do. From daily Instant Tutoring classes daily for 3 years down to a total of 5 classes for most of last year, listen to tutors and students for a change.

Y'all love beating a dead horse, don't ya? I'd settle for a lesson request. I haven't had one in about 7 months. About a year ago, I was teaching about 6 lessons a day through italki. Fortunately, I have more than I can handle at home now thanks to good networking.

Good luck and stay strong, everyone!

    :)

Hi Bart.  Yes, they lost a heap of students with dropping instant tutoring.  I also think they lost a lot of teachers.  There used to be the a lot of the same teachers on Italki but recently they have had a lot of churn as teachers try the leave italki.

Sure, but they also gained a lot now with the current situation. There's maximum saturation and that's why I'm not getting requests. I very rarely used instant tutoring. It wasn't my thing. I don't enjoy teaching casual students. But I get it for everyone else. It was a big loss.

So you are saying that in the current situation not only have teachers who were registered but not using the site come back to teach, Italki continues to hire teachers, even though the site is flooded with them  Many other schools and platforms have instead gone on a hiring freeze.  We can't even expect that there are more students flooding to the site.  With job losses around the world and contracting economies many students or in some cases their parent won't be able to afford classes at this time.   I understand there was a rise in Chinese kids using the site but they are mostly back at school now so that peak has past and their economy is contracting for the first time in more than a decade.

    It's just an assumption.

As a student, the removal of the instant tutoring system was a deal breaker for me to switch to another service.
I really hope that this system would be reinstated in the near future.

I think it was for many students but after a year of both teachers and students asking for its return and Italki doing nothing I think we have to assume that they are no longer interested in that market and will not bring it back.  Though maybe the economic change int he world etc may them have second thoughts :)

Which site?  I looked at another one that did instant tutoring but it had very few teachers and basically no students unless you were learning Tagalog.
