I concur with all the comments about instant tutoring. It has been one of my favorite aspects of italki and has made taking classes infinitely more convenient and I don't have to worry about wasting money by missing a class or cancelling last minute. Please keep this service, not sure what the logic could be for eliminating it.

Italki, these changes are not good.  Many teachers and students loved instant tutoring and the community features. I am now concerned about the future of this website.  Can we at least get an explanation as to why instant tutoring must be removed?  I feel like it was a very poor choice to announce these changes just days before they will take effect.  Before, I felt like teaching on italki was a reliable source of income.  Now, many teachers will effectively receive a pay cut and will feel insecure about future income reliability.  I sincerely hope that the italki team listens to our concerns and addresses them promptly.  I loved this website and always recommended it to my friends, but I am now shocked at how italki is willing to make these drastic, quick changes that threaten to break up the amazing online language-learning community that it has created.  Please fix this as soon as possible and issue an apology to all of the students and teachers who you have unpleasantly surprised.  It's not too late to go back to the old site but soon it will be, as members of the italki community will have to find somewhere else to go.

I am seriously disappointed that teaching credits can no longer be transferred to use as lessons. I am not a fan of any of the updates. You've just made it more difficult to use the platform for teachers.

@Katherine- you have to go to the new "teach" website in order to transfer your teacher earnings to your student wallet.

I’m quite disappointed about the removal of Instant Tutoring. I was planning on using this as soon as possible. It seems so convenient! It’s completely voluntary - those who want to use it can, and those who don’t want to can just ignore it. I’m curious to hear more about the rationale behind this.

By removing instant lessons, student and teachers must wait at least 24 hours to schedule and give a lessons (since Italki prohibits lessons scheduled within 24 hours). This is a huge limitation. Students often would request same day lessons and we'd do it using instant lessons. Without instant lesson, and the 24 hour schedule limit unchanged, there will be less business.

The issue of the missing community pages still has yet to be addressed. Italki works because it keeps the social aspect here, where it should be. If I have to look elsewhere, then why not move my business too? Hmmm, I might have to start looking. Thanks for the idea...

I suspect the removal of instant tutoring is related to server space/IT issues, but it would be helpful to have this clarified.  I personally haven't used this function, but I can see myself potentially wanting to in future.

    Student site:

While I haven't used instant tutoring, I thought it was a great feature if I needed help with my homework. There is no reason to remove this and looking at the comments, it seems pretty popular.

Also, why can't we book lessons in less than 24 hours? That makes no sense either. I can see that a particular teacher does not have a lesson scheduled at a particular time and if we are both available, why won't iTalki allow me to book it? This is even more important since instant tutoring is no longer an option.

I suggest offering specific services in addition to tutoring. For example, I would love the option to offer someone payment for creating a short audio reading documents or articles for me in my target language. Or perhaps translating a document. I suppose that could happen under the guise of "tutoring" but it would be more straight forward if there was a section for miscellaneous "jobs" and I think teachers would appreciate that additional opportunity to earn income. Just a suggestion.

    Teacher site:

While I am not a teacher on here, it seems ridiculous not to give the teachers at least 5 minutes between lessons. An hour session should really be 55 min. That was the case on one of other sites I have tried.

Wait time - teachers should not be required to wait beyond 10 minutes for students unless they have communicated that they will be late.  Same for students if a teacher is late. Anything more than ten minutes and the teacher has forfeited payment or the student has lost their money. Be respectful of people's time.

Removing Instant Tutoring with no alternative is a very bad idea. Just like other teachers, I have students who ONLY do instant tutoring and now we just lost them.

Removing instant tutoring is a totally crap decision! It's one of the best features of italki.

I am a busy person with a changing schedule in my daily life. Instant tutoring is really good for me and good for the teacher who has a bit of spare time at hand (maybe a different student cancelled their lesson at short notice so the teacher has some free time). Maybe a student did a no show for 15mins without telling the teacher.

Removing instant tutoring will make italki MUCH less useful for teachers and students. I know many other students and teachers who feel the same way. Instant tutoring is an incredible feature for many reasons. Students with hectic work and family lives don't always have the flexibility to schedule lessons days in advance. With instant tutoring, it's much easier for them to study when they have time. Other students feel more comfortable by doing instant tutoring for their first lessons, and then scheduling lessons afterwards. A significant number of my regular scheduled students found me through instant tutoring.

We are going to lose many students. Up until now, italki has been incredible for me. I've been able to financially support myself with italki. Instant tutoring is a big part of that income. So without instant tutoring, italki will be less appealing to students, italki might lose many students. How could it possibly be a good idea to remove such a good feature?

It is good that you have listened to the teachers & their feedback - to a point.  You have decided to keep the 45 & 90 min lessons, which is good.  But is that because you (Italki) can see that is very popular & financially viable/beneficial?  Why were you thinking about removing these lessons in the first place - what were the reasons?  Removing Instant Tutoring is still a bad idea.  By reading the comments, I can see it is a popular option & feature for both teacher & student.

Removing the individual cancellation policies for teachers & replacing it with one blanket rule is both annoying & frustrating.  It gets rid of individuality & character, which is very important when you want to sell yourself.  I read one teachers comment which is a good idea, why not make it a section or part of your profile in a box, instead of a box that pops-up when the cursor rolls over it so it is not confusing to students?   The students have to read your profile, so they would have to read this part as well.  Some of the new features & changes could be seen as not improving the site & platform, but let's see what happens because some of them could be improvements.

We are supposed to sit any wait for the duration of the lesson - sitting waiting for a person for an hour? This seems extremely unreasonable and extremely disrespectful to italki teachers who will have to just accept that. Showing up so late for a lesson and still expecting to be seen is rude. Not to mention this means there is no punishment for lateness. After 10 minutes if the student hasn't shown up, we should be free to do other things.

Instant Tutoring was one of the most valuable tools for me. I just don’t have too many opportunities to schedule classes 24 hours in advance. Unfortunately, I have sort of busy life and I seldom know whether I can take a lesson the next day. For me as a student, removing Instant Tutoring shows only disadvantages.

Firstly, I'd like to commend italki on having a truly great platform (up until now) especially when compared to some other offerings available out in the market place, however, speaking frankly, the way these latest changes are being made is very disappointing

We (people at large and more specifically this collective of teachers and tutors) appreciate that generally change for the better is good, although sometimes difficult to accept at first. But, if clear and transparent communication conveys the reasons behind these decisions, then that may assist us (the REAL workers on this platform) to appreciate these changes properly and thus easier agree to them - or better yet, assist italki more meaningfully to bring about better improvements, by being included in the process to a greater degree.

I genuinely appreciate that the decision has already been made to retain 45 minute classes, as I find this is a very practical time frame for many students (30 mins being too short and 60 mins becoming a stretch for some people's attention spans). As for the 90 minute time slot, although some students have utilised them with me personally, they may be superfluous (but that's merely my opinion). Thanks for keeping the former italki.

Now the crux... instant tutoring & 24 hour diary management.

NB - Please pay attention to what many people are saying above!  Instant tutoring is vital!!  I add my voice and vote to that.
If somehow, managing that is becoming a problem, italki needs to find an alternative solution, as removing that option will harm our mutual success. That's not a threat, it's a warning. Involve us to help find a solution italki, or at least explain what the real problem is. Why have you taken such a huge decision, and in all reality - crammed it down our throats?!  That's a very bitter pill to swallow. Listen to our voices.

As for managing 24 hour bookings etc, yes, I agree with many others too that we should be able to have better control and assist our clients / students / patrons to manage our respective diaries easier. And yes, it is great to have a process that does protect us from being exploited by students who waste our time (and vice versa - if that's happening), but I believe there must be better ways to achieve both of these goals. Let's find the best way, but don't cut our legs off in the meantime.

I'm personally looking forward to having an even better platform going forward, with fewer obstacles standing between us and mutual growth and prosperity.

I completely agree.  Removing Instant Tutoring is the biggest mistake iTalki has made.  Many students do not schedule classes because of lack of time and prefer instant tutoring because it is convenient for them.  Bring it back while you continue to work on or figure out a "better" option.

I often use instant tutors, and clearly teachers use it, so what purpose does it serve to remove it. Please explain. Removing a service, even if only a small number use it, it's the web, how does it cause Italki any inconvenience. Come on, just put it back. Who came up with that great idea anyway?

Maria I dont want to have or give 55 min lessons, but yes 60 min, so lessons of 90min will be 85 and 45 will be 40? If the teacher dont had that capacity or arent used because how it is in his /her country so he/she should start 5 min early in the days of the lessons in a row. A student who takes 5 lessons in a week of 60 min will lose 25 min per week.

On the desktop version, the Monthly Calendar doesn't work properly. I just tried to remove a time-slot and add a new one. Each time, it says 'Updated Successfully' yet it doesn't change on the calendar!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix this urgently as I'm sure a lot of teachers work on other platforms too, and as a result of bookings on other platforms, we have to constantly keep our italki scheduled updated to avoid double-bookings.

It amazes me that these things are not tested before they are released! Why on earth would you not?!

Good Lord --- is it too much to ask for a functional website? Several problems I have with the new teacher website:
1 lesson times are displayed out of order on the calendar. Seriously?
2 Can't add availability to the calendar. When I click on the drop-down menu, there are two times only and I can't scroll, no mater which browser I use or how much I try.
3 Can't update my informal tutoring course description or name.
    4 Can't update my profile.
5 A bunch of "action required" items crowd the dashboard --- all of which are about leaving feedback. Sorry, most of my long-term students do not leave feedback after every single lesson and nor do I. This is clutter and distracts us from items that actually do require action such as accepting lesson requests or changes.

Before launching a new website that focuses on design and look maybe test it properly to make it functional? I have built systems and websites, and any competent developer tests the creation thoroughly and methodically.
Are you trying to alienate your students and teachers? Maybe focus more on substance and truly helpful developments instead of switching up the design and removing features because you don't want to/cannot deal with bugs, and thinking "prettier" means better. I liked italki just fine two updates ago. This is just a mess.

Also, why is no one responding to feedback about the real problems with the website? I've seen comments here, I've sent feedback through the new website, and no one seems to be addressing these serious problems.

As a student (I've taken almost 200 lessons and also purchased a bunch of lessons for someone I referred) I can't believe you've gotten rid of Instant Tutoring! I only used it once but it was so convenient. Why this change? Who asked for it? Certainly NOT students. Cannot wrap my head around this.

I'm extremely frustrated because I planned to use Instant Tutoring often in the upcoming months. Booking on "short notice" of 24 hours in advance isn't going to be a substitute. I'm really, really disappointed.
