What types of teachers are there on italki
There are two types of teachers on italki - professional teachers, and informal tutors. Both types of teachers are Native or Advanced (C2) in the languages that they are teaching, and are admitted only after submitting an online application which is personally reviewed by italki staff.
Professional Teachers are teaching professionals that have been trained in foreign language acquisition. They have at least one of the qualifications below, as verified by italki staff:
- Professional teaching experience in a school, university, or language institute
- University degree in education
- Teaching certification (i.e. CELTA or TESOL) from an accredited institution
Community Tutors are native speakers who can help you learn a language through informal tutoring or speaking practice. Community Tutors are not formally qualified teachers, but they are knowledgeable and passionate about helping others learn their language.
How do I know the quality of an italki teacher?
italki reviews every teaching application individually before allowing a new teacher to open an italki teaching profile. The applications are reviewed by italki staff who are educators themselves, and we accept tutors or teachers who we expect will provide good language lessons for italki students.
When looking at a teacher's profile page, please use the following indicators to help you determine if the teacher meets your requirements:
- Teacher rating scores
- Written and video introductions
- Background and verified credentials
- Teacher statistics and student feedback
- Teacher activity on the website
Which teacher is right for me?
If you prefer structured lessons or don't yet have your own materials, we recommend that you choose a Professional Teacher. If you prefer to practice conversation, then we recommend you choose a Community Tutor.
