How does the italki fish work?

Meet your new learning companion, your very own italki Fish! As you keep learning on italki, your fish will grow and evolve. It’s a friendly, fun way to track your progress and stay motivated every day.

How does the system work?

Every time you learn, you earn water drops. Once you’ve collected enough drops, you'll see your fish grow from something small to a legend of the sea! Here’s how you can earn drops:

• 1-on-1 lessons or group classes
• Reviewing flashcards
• Doing your homework
• Completing practice sets recommended by italki
• Taking the italki Language Tests
• Earn surprise bonus drops when you unlock learning milestones, like when you reach your 10th lesson mark!

What does the weekly streak mean?

A weekly streak means you’re making a consistent effort to learn every week. To maintain your streak, all you need to do is have a lesson or complete 5 practice sets recommended by italki (including the AI homework assigned by your teacher).

When you reach a three-week learning streak, the water drops you receive after each learning activity will increase by an additional 5%. The longer your streak is, the more bonus drops you will get.

Will I lose water if I stop learning?

Yes. Your water level will drain slowly every day. If you don’t earn any drops in a week, the water loss will speed up. If the water level hits 0, your fish will unfortunately “die.” So keep learning to keep your fish happy!

What if my fish dies? Can I revive it?

Absolutely, but you need to do it fast! Here’s how to bring it back:

• Have a lesson
• Or you can use a Revive Potion (you automatically earn one when your fish levels up. This starts at Level 3: you can store up to two potions at a time)

Whichever you do, you’ll need to do it within 7 days of its water level reaching to zero, or you’ll lose your fish for good😭… but you can always start over with a new fish and continue your journey!

Can I pause my journey if I don’t have time to learn?

Yes, life happens! To hit pause:

• Use a Freeze Potion, this is earned each time your Fish levels up (from Level 3 onward)
• It freezes after you’ve lost water for 7 days, also preserving your streak
• If you return and resume learning before the 7 days are up, your freeze ends immediately
• Need more time? Just use another Freeze Potion after the initial 7 days

What happens when my Fish reaches the final level?

Congrats on reaching the final stage! That means you’ve built a strong learning routine and a fish that’s grown with you along the way.

Your fish will stay in this final form, but future updates may unlock even more cool evolutions as you continue your language journey.

Can I have more than one fish?

Yes! You can have one fish per language you’re learning on italki. That way, each language gets its own companion and progress path, perfect for a polyglot!
