If a Community Tutor has a teaching certification or credentials, then he or she can apply for a Professional Teacher profile.
Please note that the instructions below are only for current Community Tutors wishing to change their status to Professional Teachers. If you do not yet have a teaching account and have the required certification, you can apply for a professional teacher profile directly.
Before you apply, please read the following information.
- Learn about the differences between being a Professional Teacher and Community Tutor.
Difference between Professional Teacher and Community Tutor - Check if all your teaching languages are open for Professional Teachers. If one of them is closed, you won’t be able to apply.
Language open/closed list - Check if you have the certification or credentials to become a Professional Teacher.
What types of certification or credentials are required for a Professional Teaching Profile? - After your application is accepted, you will be able to update your previous lessons or add more lessons. Your previous lesson history and reviews will also be saved.

In the upgrade application form, you will be prompted for the following information about your background and experience.
- Education
Example: A university degree in teaching XXX as a foreign or second language - Work experience
Example: Professional employment as a language teacher
Note: Any necessary documents must be uploaded to the "Certificates" section - Certificates
Example: CELTA, TEFL, etc.
You will also have the opportunity to update your self-introduction and video.
Can I downgrade my profile?
Professional teachers can contact italki support to downgrade their teacher profiles.
However, the downgrade action is irreversible. If you want to upgrade your profile again, please follow the normal upgrade process.
